Spotlight on… Katie Carrier

Katie Carrier has a diverse professional background spanning sectors such as social housing and financial services. She dedicated five years to PA Consulting, where she led a practice in psychology and behavioural science. Katie is the Head of Growth and Development at ATT, concentrating on strategic expansion. Meet Katie Carrier!

Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to ATT?
I have had a varied career working across different sectors, from social housing to financial services. Before joining ATT, I worked at PA Consulting for 5 years, where I established and led a psychology and behavioural science practice. As a psychologist myself, I have always been fascinated by human behaviour, and I feel a strong sense of purpose in keeping people safe in the workplace. This is what initially led me to ATT. After working with ATT whilst at PA for over a year, I was continuously blown away by the products and the values the Directors demonstrated. So, when the opportunity arose for me to join the company, I didn’t need to think twice!

What’s your job at ATT?
I am the Head of Growth and Development, which means I am helping us grow and be even more successful than we are today. This is great for me because it is a perfect blend of all my previous experience and skills I have gained over my 20-year career.

What primary responsibilities will you focus on in your new role?
I have numerous responsibilities. My main focus is helping us deliver against our strategic ambitions as a company. Growing in a sustainable way. This includes internally focused activities, such as how we operate effectively, as well as externally focused, such as improving the science behind what we do.

Are there any emerging trends that you find particularly exciting or relevant in the industry?
Having worked in this field for many years, what I am really pleased to see is that over the last 5-10 years, the H&S industry is finally starting to recognise the importance of behaviour, mindset, and culture in safety. It is no longer about strict procedures and compliance training. We are now in the world of psychology, neuroscience, and behavioural science. This is what ATT is all about. Helping organisations create a safe culture through drama backed by science.

What is your favourite project you’ve worked on in your career?
The one that stands out the most is a piece of work I did during my time at PA on behalf of a transport client to identify safety behavioural training needsI brought together a team of behavioural scientists and data scientists, and we applied natural language processing to free text data to identify the reasons why people behave in an unsafe way. This allowed the client to make more informed decisions on where to invest in their safety behaviour training. This was a groundbreaking piece of work that had never been done before and I am very proud of what we achieved in just 6 months.

What is the one thing we can’t guess from your LinkedIn profile?
So many things! But if I had to pick just one, I would say that alongside my day job with ATT, I am also an Interior Designer. My company, Practically Beautiful, is all about creating homes that work hard for you whilst still being aesthetically pleasing. Because you can have both!

Favourite book/podcast/movie you’d recommend?
For those who love psychology and in particular true crime, I would recommend ‘The Killer Across the Table’ by John E Douglas who founded the FBI Behavioural Analysis Unit. As a side note, I would also highly recommend Mindhunter on Netflix which is also based on John E Douglas’ work.
